The sibling team that famously brought the cinema verite style to documentary films in the 60s might no longer be around, but Albert Maysles continues to keep the family name alive, despite the passing of his brother/co-creator David in 1987. Last night, the Maysles Documentary Center–also known as the Maysles Institute, a not-for-profit organization that founded Harlem’s only independent film house–hosted its first annual Spring Benefit, ‘Spring Pong.’
As Ultragrrrl Sarah Lewitinn spun tracks at SPiN, family, fans, and table tennis aficionados gathered to wrap themselves in the warm embrace of Mr. Maysles, the co-director of Grey Gardens, Meet Marlon Brando, and Gimme Shelter. True story, Mr. Maysles may be the world’s best hugger.
