the eight-day week

To Do Friday: Soul of Whit

From empowered women to their exact opposites, Damsels in Distress opens at your local indie theater, bringing with it a period-piece sensibility about neurasthenic college ladies so damaged by their beaux that they need to learn assertiveness. (Where’s Geena Davis when you need her?) Last week, we attended a free outdoor screening of Damsels director Whit Stillman’s first movie, Metropolitan—but this week we’ll be happily indoors (our delicate skin free from the newly beating sun), munching on that good art-house popcorn and shushing
those old art-house dowagers.

Damsels in Distress opens today.
