Bonjour, New Yorkers! Over two hundred years ago on July 14, French citizens stormed the Bastille prison, fighting for their independence and ending the French Revolution. And in a year where U.S. and Canadian French expats for the first time will be represented in the National Assembly of France (by a longtime New Yorker no less!), we are more excited than ever to celebrate le quatorze juillet with our French friends.

How will we cope without fireworks or military parades, like the one that wraps around the Champs-Élysées every year? Champagne and pétanque, obviously!

The long weekend of parties kicks off tonight, and below the jump are our five must-dos for the big French to-do.

1. Bastille Day Ball
Why we're excited: There's a chance to win tickets to France and an open bar all for $12.00. Also the U.S. Ambassador to France is going to be there, which we're pretending to be really excited about (kind of like how everyone becomes a die-hard hockey fan during the Stanley Cup).
When: Thursday, July 12, 2012, 7:30 pm - 1:00 am
Where: The 404

2. Sea to Sun-Set Sundays Celebrates Bastille Day Weekend
Why we're excited: Air conditioning! Plus, the upstairs lounge has an awesome view of the city and boasts a retractable roof. French DJ Super Jaimie is going to be spinning as special champagne drinks are served.
When: Sunday, July 15, 3:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Where: Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel

3. Bastille Day at Skyroom NYC
Why we're excited: The Skyroom is going all out for Bastille Day this year. The French-owned lounge is having 50% discounts on all bottles of Perrier Jouet Grand Brut Champagne, and card-carrying Frenchmen can get in for free by flashing their national ID.
When: Saturday, July 14, 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Where: Skyroom NYC

4. Bastille Day at Cercle Rouge
Why we're excited: Cercle Rouge is going to be closing West Broadway between Beach and White streets for a giant street fair pétanque tournament. Munch on merguez frites sandwiches, and spend French Independence day taking in the sun and dancing.
When: Thursday, July 12, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Where: Cercle Rouge

5. Bastille Day on 60th Street
Why we're excited: For the more "family friendly" take on French Independence Day, check out Bastille Day on 60th Street. Live music and face painting among other activities will be open to all guests this Sunday.
When: Sunday, July 15, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Where: French Institute Alliance Française
