It’s a summer double feature courtesy of the “Universal 100” retrospective, in which Universal Studios shows just how broad its backlist is. Apparently, their appetites were catholic enough to allow for Spike Lee’s groundbreaking examination of race in America, Do the Right Thing, and Amy Heckerling’s dopey teen comedy, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (written by Cameron Crowe when we loved him, starring Sean Penn when we loved him!). Sure, the latter’s a bit downmarket for the Film Forum—and the order’s a bit screwy, given that we’re laughing after Mr. Lee’s rioting and violence—but what else would we be doing to entertain ourselves? A Neil Sedaka concert?
Film Forum, 209 West Houston Street; tickets and information can be found at filmforum.org.
