(Andrew Toth/PatrickMcMullan.com)

"The first time I saw it I felt sick all day, but it's not so bad the second time around," LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney told us Tuesday as he leaned against a brick wall on 12th Street.

We stood with him outside of a screening of Shut Up and Play the Hits: The Very Loud Ending of LCD Soundsystem, a rockumentary capturing the band's epic Madison Square Garden farewell show in April 2011 and the following 24 hours in the life of frontman/mastermind James Murphy. Even though fans watched from butter-stained velvet seats and not a packed world-famous arena, there was applause after every song.

At the screening, presented by the Peggy Siegal Company, we spotted John Leguizamo, Anne Hathaway, designer Charlotte Ronson, actor Alex Karpovsky, DJ Chelsea Leyland, <del>confirmed</del> <del>couple</del> downplayed duo Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and the entire band, who was catching the film once more after a private friends and family screening a few weeks prior.

The film explored Mr. Murphy's possible reasons for LCD Soundsystem disbanding after just three albums—his age, the pressure of being a rockstar and the loss of anonymity due to celebrity, all of which struck us as ironic, as Mr. Murphy dazzled in an all white linen suit and Chinese tennis shoes, beaming a proud smile as the cameras flashes captured the gray on his stubbly face. He looked all the rockstar. All his age. And comfortable.

At the after party at Lilium at the W Union Square, Aziz Ansari (who hosted the shindig) told The Observer that he'd been a huge LCD fan since he heard their first single "Losing My Edge."

“I remember anxiously waiting for their next album to leak and then I had the pleasure of meeting James and we became really good friends. Great dude,” Mr. Ansari said while pouring some champagne for some friends lined up on a leather banquette.

The basement club was packed and the ceiling was low. We bumped into Kaylee Defer (Gossip Girl) who was blonde, tan and dressed in snug jeans and a halter. She wasn’t feeling the scene either.

“I don’t like crowded bars,” she told us while anxiously looking for someone. We helped by pointing in the direction of a waxy-moustached fellow we had seen her with earlier. We asked what her next stop was. “Anywhere else," she said with a nervous smile. "Tight spaces are not for me.”

The Observer started thinking about our own escape too, pondering somewhere quiet like the restaurant Marlow & Sons, which was repeatedly referenced in Shut Up as the place the band and friends would all meet the night after their final show.

Mr. Murphy walked by after taking a group photo with his ex-bandmantes and we asked, “Are you all going to Marlow’s again to celebrate?”

He giggled and said, "No. I’m actually going to Bilbao."

"A restaurant?" we asked.

"No," Mr. Murphy chuckled. "Bilbao, Spain. To DJ. That's what I do now."

He grinned and scanned the room and we were certain he was reflecting on his career, the Grammy nominations, his comrades and his final night as James Murphy The Rockstar. Or maybe he was just trying to find someone who didn't think Bilbao was a restaurant.

The movie will be in theaters one night only, July 18; find a theater near you here.

While we attended the screening of The Amazing Spider-Man last night, we'll leave the movie to the critics at The Daily Bugle. However, the afterparty, thrown by the Peggy Siegal Company and the Gerber Group at Lilium? We were on that like Peter Parker is on the Spider-Man beat.

“That movie was amazing! Andrew Garfield is so good as Spider-Man!” independent film director Ry Russo Young told us over the lively music that filled the modest-sized Lilium lounge. We barely had time to agree with her before being separated in the crowded space. However, we did see her talking with director, actor and producer Alex Karpovsky, an actor on the HBO series Girls with Lena Dunham. (Ms. Dunham and Ms. Young co-wrote Nobody Walks together, which was recently screened at the BAMcinemafest.)

We asked Smash’s Jaime Cepero about his preferred superhero. “Spawn has to be one of my favorites. Spawn is just a BAMF,” Mr. Cepero told us, referencing a subversive internet acronym (Google it). However, before we could even stare at the looping video of a pair of lipsticked lips sensually licking up pomegranate seeds that played above the bar, we heard Twilight star Chaske Spencer’s deep voice behind us. Mr. Spencer told us that now that he is finally done with Twilight, he is working with his new production company on some indie projects.

Actor, singer and American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis was moving a little slow due to a huge protective boot he had on his right leg. “No, I was not playing superhero,” he laughed. “I was actually playing softball at Yankee Stadium. It had always been my dream to play at Yankee Stadium and I got to do it for a charity fundraiser, but I rolled my ankle. But the boot helps and it matches my pants!” He lifted it slightly to show us. “Kinda Spider-Man style right?"

The boot certainly did not stop Mr. Maroulis from snagging up three of the Spider-Man action figures that were floating around the room. His girlfriend, model Ashley Haas, who he met in a bar down the street from the theater where he performed in Rock of Ages, laughed at his antics. Mr. Maroulis admitted to us that he has yet to see the movie version of the play, despite making an appearance in it.

The party was still going strong when we left. As we were leaving we overheard Miss USA Olivia Culpo mention that it must be nice to swing from building to building like Spider-Man. Well, Ms. Culpo, it certainly would beat the subway.

Okay, so they are not a real-life couple (we asked), but last night at Bagatelle NY , where The Peggy Siegal Company and The Wall Street Journal were hosting an after-party for Oliver Stone's Savages (sponsored by Vitamin Water: favorite beverage of Mexican drug lords), we saw Girls's Alex Karpovsky and Zosia Mamet posing for pictures and totally wanted to believe that this could be a thing. Right? How cute would that be?

"Should we just start telling people that we're a couple?" Mr. Karpovsky asked The Observer. In the season finale of seriously the only show people still want to talk about (until Breaking Bad comes back on), Ray de-virginized Ms. Mamet's "least virginy-virgin ever" Shoshanna.

We mentioned it'd definitely bring some good press. Especially since the Vulture piece that graphed the likeability of the guys on the show over the course of the first season, and found the caustic Ray at the top by the finale. (It was his "slim leg" comment and accompanying hand motion that did it.)

"Okay, you can start that rumor," he laughed. "You should be a PR agent, you are really good at it. You'd be phenomenal." We told him we already had a job.

"Oh yeah, you're 'a writer,'" he said, with full air quotes. Other helpful things we were told that night by the Tiny Furniture actor, whom we met up with at the Soho Grand earlier that night to attend the VS. Magazine party for The Heimlich Maneuver: We had dry skin on our nose, we mumbled too much, our lipstick was smeared, and we were wearing a bra that was probably too big. It was awesome: just like actually being on Girls and getting berated by his character!

Around that point Peggy Siegal jumped in to steer Mr. Karpovsky toward Oliver Stone (who we learned spent the party scowling not because he wasn't happy with the film's reception, but because his ex-wife had shown up).

Drifting over to a more demure Ms. Mamet, we complimented her on her range of character choices--we still can't reconcile Shoshanna with the fast-talking lesbian journalist she plays on Mad Men--and asked what her afterparty plans were.

"I don't know, maybe something on the Lower East Side," the 24-year-old told us.

Is that where she lived?

"No. I live in Williamsburg," Ms. Mamet said, which quickly shattered the illusion that we were living inside an episode of Girls, because a) Ms. Mamet's voice is way less high-pitched than she makes it for the perpetually perky NYU student, and b) Shosh would never live in Brooklyn.

Mike Birbiglia invites Brooklyn to sleepwalk with him

"I just want to dedicate this movie for anyone who has just moved in with their girlfriends," Mike Birbiglia deadpanned last night after the screening of his directorial debut, Sleepwalk With Me. Based on his one-man show that has been building up buzz for the past six or so years that he's been performing it--resulting in a book, an off-Broadway show, and now a feature film-- the cinematic version of Mr. Birbiglia's story of strange sleep habits is full of pathos, comedy, and weird, weird imagery.

After premiering at Sundance, Sleepwalk was chosen to open the yearly BAMcinemaFest, an annual self-referential Brooklyn film festival in which the majority of the films feature characters suffering from New York ennui and the term "psychodrama" is used haphazardly in the blurbs. For this purpose, opening BAM's movie week with Sleepwalk was a smart move by the festival's organizers: it's about a New Yorker who, for all the film's comedy, has to deal with deeply distressing sociometry stemming from his night time behavior.

Without spoiling the plot, let's just say that Mr. Birbiglia's relationship comment was a tad...barbed.

But not to end the screening on a sad note, the co-host for the evening, NPR's Ira Glass, announced a special surprise: As a giant cake decorated like a pizza was brought onstage, Mr. Glass wished Mr. Birbiglia's a happy 34th birthday.

If the cherubic comic had been a more caustic comedian--a Louis C.K. type, maybe--this moment would have been the literal icing on the FML cake. But as a regular NPR guest and Moth contributor--God, if we had a nickel every time we heard someone mention The Moth last night-- the literary comedian can probably beat out Michel Gondry in the whimsy department, and thus the pizza cake moment served to lighten a temporary dark moment. "I think that's a cake from the Internet!" He exclaimed. (We weren't sure what he meant, but we went home and Googled it. Apparently it's somewhat of a tradition.)

As most of Brooklyn (and a few brave city-dwellers) crammed upstairs to sample from the array of snack tables (a hot dog cart, a hostess handing out warm milk with cookies, a felafel station, etc.) and wait in long lines for small glasses of alcohol, the phrase "Brooklyn prom" came to mind. Maybe that's because people kept calling it that. If the White House Correspondent's dinner is nerd prom, then an Ira Glass/Mike Birbiglia open bar might garner a similar moniker. Especially since "People Who Subscribe to The New Yorker But Hardly Ever Read It" Prom is quite a mouthful.

We did ask Mr. Birbiglia about his fatalistic dedication.

"Oh yeah, as soon as I said that, I thought, 'How many people in the audience just moved in together? Whoops.'" But the cherubic actor wanted us to know that it's not all negativity. "I moved in with that girlfriend and it didn't work out, but I moved in with my next girlfriend, and now she's my wife!"

Other notable guests included Saturday Night Live's John Mulaney and Girls actor Alex Karpovsky, who had a small part in Sleepwalk With Me and is currently promoting his new pseudo-documentary, Red Flag.

Since Ray was totally our favorite character this season, we just had to know: Did Mr. Karpovsky see himself as the voice of reason on the HBO hit?

"You know, Judd Apatow told me when we began filming, 'You're the bubble popper.'" Mr. Karpovsky recounted.

"The bubble popper?"

"Yeah...he said that when any of the characters were being too elitist, or too dramatic, or whatever, my job was to pop, pop, pop." Mr. Karpovsky made motions like he was sticking his finger into tiny little bubbles.

We had a hundred more annoying Girls-related questions to ask the actor, but he was already making "Help Me" eyes at two female groupies, so we decided not to press our luck for now.

Pop.
