Derby Day at the Plaza

Audacious Hats and Austere Spending on Derby Day at the Plaza

The attendees of the Derby Day hat contest at the Plaza Hotel’s Rose Club on Saturday, like our farflung friends, the voting public of Greece and France, seemed to be chafing under self-imposed austerity measures.

In the lead-up to post time, Neil Rosen, on-air movie critic for NY1, sauntered up to us and wantonly flirted, “Are you looking for me?” We weren’t, but a miffed bartender with a thin ponytail was. “Where is your friend who bought that glass of red? He didn’t pay.” Mr. Rosen sheepishly admitted he didn’t know where his friend was, and he balked after the bartender trotted off. “That’s guilt by association! I shouldn’t have to pay.” Read More

A Dog Christening with R. Couri Hay and Friends: Animal Weddings, Mad Russians, and Music

(Cassandra Seidenfeld, R. Couri Hay, and Wendy Diamond)

“Have you ever met the Mad Russian?” Animal Fair founder and dog lover Wendy Diamond asked The Observer at dinner last night. We had been covertly smoking outside on the lush patio of publicist R. Couri Hay‘s Upper West Side apartment after watching “Hindu Priest” Robin Cofer christen Mr. Hay’s dog, Webster Westbrook Alexander Hay, by rubbing behind the long-haired Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s ears and whispering something in his ear.

Webster was being named after Mr. Hay’s good friend, Roger Webster, who died last year. Earlier in the evening, Mr. Hay had lead a group sing-along to classics like “No Business Like Show Business.”

We had not heard of the Mad Russian, but it seemed like that kind of night. Read More

Who Works Harder, Jon Hamm or Kim Kardashian? : Patrick McMullan, Ben Widdicombe, and Tastemakers Discuss ‘Cult of Celebrity’

(Ben Widdicombe, Glenn Johnson, Patrick McMullan)

Last night the Soho House hosted the Roundtable Creative Media Group‘s monthly salon of industry trends. Five experts from diverse backgrounds spoke to an audience on how exactly celebrities are marketed and branded for today’s magazine and television audience.

What could have turned out to be a snooze-worthy event for anyone not in the branding/PR industry turned out to be a lively, insightful discussion, moderation by Glenn Johnson, Vice President of Evins Communication. Famed photog Patrick McMullan joined Gilt City’s EIC (ex-TMZ editor and tattoo hater) Ben Widdicombe, Slate PR’s Bianca Bianconi, VH1 executive producer Warren Cohen, and Budweiser Entertainment’s Brand Ambassador Colin Gorman to debate everything from Ryan Seacrest‘s deal with Colgate to Andy Warhol, Mob Wives, and Greek gods. (And no, not Chris Hemingsworth as Thor.) Read More

Sick of Art Shows? Try a Night at the Museum

With the Armory show, Whitney Biennial, Brucennial, the Art Show Gala thrown by the Art Dealers Association of America (not to mention the various VIP events, pre-shows, alternative shows, and the option of just staying home and staring at a blank wall until your eyes bleed), New York’s Art Week can be as overwhelming as Fashion Week. May we suggest an alternative? Read More
